As a social work student too often, we speak about the “system” an invisible construct referred to as the cause of many disparities for racialized individuals. Educational institutions are often the system in itself and while institutions speak to change, it rarely occurs.

This is a real opportunity to make systemic change for an inclusive atmosphere for all individuals of diverse backgrounds. I truly believe that if we can educate, influence and impact individuals about anti-racist work, we can play an active role in lessening those discriminating interactions that commonly occur.

While I know this work is going to take time, and for racialized individuals, racism can’t be avoided, at least I can have an active role in minimizing it for those who come after me.
